Description
Foxboro FBM240 Compact Fieldbus Module
Basic Features:
- Channel Configuration: Equipped with 8-channel input and 8-channel output functions, it can meet various on-site I/O requirements. Each module can independently maintain the output at a specified output value and independently read the observed value of its output.
- Redundancy Design: It can be used as a single module or in a redundant configuration. When a redundant configuration is adopted, a pair of redundant modules are combined to provide redundancy protection at the FBM layer, improving the reliability and stability of the system.
Output Capability:
- Relay Output Types: Supports various types of discrete relay outputs, including 10A (80 to 120V AC), 5A (15 to 30V DC), 5A (80 to 125V DC), etc. The appropriate output type can be selected according to actual application scenarios to drive different on-site equipment.
- Fail-Safe Fallback: The channel fallback value (0 or 1) for each of the eight digital outputs can be specified. In case of a fault, the output can be made according to the preset fallback value to ensure the safety and stability of the system.
Input Characteristics: The eight discrete input terminals are mainly used to read the voltage on the relay contacts and have a voltage monitoring function. The on-state voltage is 15 to 60V DC, the typical current of a single module is 1.4mA (5 to 60V DC), the typical current of a redundant module is 2.8mA (5 to 60V DC), the maximum applied voltage is 60V DC, and the maximum load current is 2.0A.
Terminal Assembly: On-site I/O signals are connected to the FBM subsystem through a DIN rail-mounted terminal assembly (TA). The TA used with the FBM240 provides a 5A non-sealed relay or a 10A non-sealed relay for each output, and has functions such as 15-60V DC switches and voltage monitor input terminals.
Fault Detection and Monitoring: It has the function of reading back the output contact monitor, which can monitor the output state in real-time, and also has a high-coverage FBM fault detection mechanism internally. When a fault is detected, the redundant partner can automatically continue to drive discrete outputs and monitor inputs to ensure the normal operation of the system. In addition, it can also perform fault detection on the output demand status of each internal channel, facilitating timely detection and location of problems.
In general, the FBM240 module, with its characteristics such as multiple channels, support for redundancy, various output types, and perfect fault detection, can well adapt to the complex environment of industrial sites and provide stable and reliable input and output signal processing capabilities for the DCS system.

Application Cases
Chemical Industry: In chemical production, a large number of valves, pumps and other equipment need to be controlled, and various process parameters need to be monitored. The FBM240 module can be connected to on-site electric valves, control the opening and closing of the valves through its discrete output channels, and use the discrete input channels to monitor the status feedback signals of the valves to ensure that the valves act as required. It can also be connected with pressure sensors, temperature sensors, etc. to collect process parameters in real-time. When the parameters exceed the set values, it can trigger alarm devices or control related equipment to adjust through the output channels, ensuring the safety and stability of the production process.
Power Industry: In power plants, the FBM240 module can be used in the control system of generator sets. It can be connected to various protection devices of the generator, receive action signals of the protection devices through input channels, such as overcurrent and overvoltage signals. Once an abnormal signal is detected, it can quickly issue a trip command through the output channel to protect the generator equipment. At the same time, it can also be used to control the opening and closing of various switches in the auxiliary power system, realizing the reasonable distribution and monitoring of auxiliary power.
Manufacturing Industry: In the automated production line of automobile manufacturing, the FBM240 module can be used to control the actions of robots. It sends control signals to robots through output channels to make them complete welding, assembly and other operations, and receives the status information of robots through input channels, such as position feedback and fault alarms, so as to realize real-time monitoring and precise control of robots. In addition, it can also be used to monitor other equipment on the production line, such as conveyor chains and punch presses, to ensure the coordinated operation of the entire production line.
Pharmaceutical Industry: In the clean air conditioning system of pharmaceutical workshops, the FBM240 module can play an important role. It can be connected to various valves and fans of the air conditioning system, control the opening of valves and the speed of fans through output channels, thereby adjusting parameters such as temperature, humidity and air volume in the workshop to meet the requirements of pharmaceutical processes. At the same time, it uses input channels to collect data from temperature and humidity sensors, pressure sensors, etc., to monitor the environmental parameters of the workshop in real-time, ensuring the stability and reliability of the pharmaceutical production environment.
Sewage Treatment Field: In sewage treatment plants, the FBM240 module can be used to control the operation of sewage treatment equipment. For example, it controls the opening and closing of aeration equipment through output channels to adjust the aeration volume to meet the growth needs of microorganisms; controls the operation of sludge pumps to realize the transportation and treatment of sludge. It collects data from water quality sensors through input channels, such as pH value and chemical oxygen demand, and adjusts the treatment process in a timely manner according to the water quality to ensure that the effluent quality meets the standards.
