Functions and Applications

It applies to distribution feeder protection in solidly grounded, high-impedance grounded, or resonant grounding systems, as well as scenarios such as busbar interlocking schemes, high-speed fault detection for arc flash mitigation, load shedding schemes, transmission line backup protection, and distributed generation interconnection protection.

Protection Functions

  • Overcurrent Protection: May include two-phase Time Overcurrent (TOC) elements, each phase equipped with a level detector to set pickup current levels for tripping, alarming, or control. It allows selection of multiple curve shapes and multipliers, with instantaneous or linear reset time characteristics and voltage limiting functions. Additionally, it may feature two-phase Instantaneous Overcurrent (IOC) elements, enabling setting of pickup current, action time delay, and the minimum number of phases required for operation.
  • Ground Overcurrent Protection: Possibly includes Neutral IOC & TOC and Ground IOC & TOC functions, applicable to ground fault protection in solidly grounded and low-impedance grounded distribution systems. Directional elements can supervise ground overcurrent protection elements to isolate faulty feeders and prevent feedback to utility power faults.
  • Voltage Protection: Should have overvoltage/undervoltage protection, tripping or alarming when voltage exceeds the specified set value for a certain period. It may also include negative sequence voltage elements (for detecting system imbalance) and neutral displacement voltage elements (for detecting ground faults).

Communication Capabilities

Typically equipped with three standard serial communication ports: one RS232 port on the front panel, two RS485/RS422 ports at the rear, and an optional rear Ethernet port. It supports ModBus® RTU, DNP3.0 Level 2, and ModBus RTU TCP/IP protocols. The communication system enables simultaneous communication through all ports, allowing integration into LAN or WAN.
