Description

Woodward 8273-5015 Digital Load Sharing and Speed Control Unit

Function and application: It mainly provides load distribution and speed control for engine-driven generators, ensuring that the generators can operate stably under different load conditions and maintain an appropriate rotational speed, thereby guaranteeing the stability and reliability of power output.
Input voltage: The input voltage is 24V DC. However, in practical applications, the voltage can fluctuate within the range of 18 to 40 volts DC, and the equipment can still operate normally.
Applicable places: It is suitable for ordinary places, that is, non-hazardous environments, and can operate stably in conventional industrial plants, power plants and other environments.

Hardware configuration: Based on a microprocessor, it is equipped with standard hardware components such as load sensors, actuator drivers, and microprocessor speed sensors. Meanwhile, it features a pair of configurable analog inputs and configurable analog outputs, as well as a set of 8 discrete switch inputs (3 of which are configurable) and 4 configurable discrete relay driver outputs.
Communication interface: It is equipped with RS-232 and RS-422 communication ports, adopts a 9-pin connector, and supports full-duplex communication at baud rates ranging from 1200 to 38,400, facilitating data interaction and integration with other devices or control systems.

Speed control range: The engine and generator speeds need to be synchronized, with a range of 90 to 3600 revolutions per minute. The frequency provided by the magnetic pickup should be within the range of 100 to 20,000 Hertz at the rated speed.
Algorithm advantages: It is equipped with a unique built-in algorithm. Through the application of load pulses and load rejection logic, it can enhance the transient response capability of speed control, quickly respond to load changes, and enable the system to quickly return to a stable state.
Operating temperature: The operating temperature range is from -40 ℃ to + 70℃, which can adapt to a wide temperature environment and meet the temperature conditions of most ordinary places.

Application case:
Data center backup power system: A large data center is equipped with multiple engine-driven generators as backup power sources. The 8273-5015 is applied in the generator control system. When the mains power is interrupted, it can quickly start the generator and precisely distribute the load to ensure that each generator bears the appropriate load and prevent individual generators from overloading. Meanwhile, in response to the load changes in the data center, the speed of the generator is adjusted in real time to ensure the stability and efficiency of power supply, providing a guarantee for the continuous power supply of key equipment in the data center.

Temporary power supply system for mines: In some mining sites, due to the scattered operation areas and their distance from the municipal power grid, generators are usually used as temporary power supply equipment. The 8273-5015 can be installed on generators used in mines. It can rationally allocate the output power of the generator according to the power demands of different equipment in the mine (such as excavators, crushers, lighting systems, etc.), enabling the generator to operate efficiently. Moreover, when the load of the mining equipment fluctuates greatly, the generator speed can be adjusted in a timely manner to maintain the stability of voltage and frequency, ensuring the normal operation of the mining production.

The power system of a ship: The power system of a large cargo ship is composed of generators driven by multiple engines. The 8273-5015 is used in the power system of this ship, which can achieve load balanced distribution among generators, ensuring that the generators can operate stably during the ship’s navigation, whether it is in a full-load navigation state or a low-speed cruising state, or under different usage conditions of various equipment on board (such as navigation systems, communication equipment, engine room power equipment, etc.). Meanwhile, it can precisely control the generator speed according to the changes in the ship’s power demand, reduce fuel consumption and improve the economic efficiency of the ship’s operation.

Temporary power supply at construction sites: At a large construction site, the construction area is extensive and there are numerous electrical devices, including tower cranes, concrete mixers, electric welding machines, etc. To meet the power demand for construction, multiple generators have been set up as temporary power sources. 8273-5015 played a significant role in this scenario. It distributed the load to each generator, ensuring that each generator operated under the best working conditions and extending the service life of the generators. At the same time, adjust the generator speed in a timely manner according to the start and stop of the construction equipment and the changes in load to ensure the stability of the power supply at the construction site and avoid the impact on the construction progress and normal operation of the equipment due to power fluctuations.
